n.

1. The quality that renders something desirable, useful, or valuable: the worth of higher education.
2. Material or market value: stocks having a worth of ten million dollars.
3. A quantity of something that may be purchased for a specified sum or by a specified means: ten dollars’ worth of natural gas; wanted their money’s worth.
4. Wealth; riches: her net worth.
5. Quality that commands esteem or respect; merit: a person of great worth.
The above is the complete definition of the word ‘worth’ as put forth by the free online dictionary.  I would like to summarize.
The worth of something is the price that someone is willing to pay for that something.
This whole concept has been messing me up a bit recently, in regards to my (and your) intrinsic worth as a human being.  I have this mad tendency of feeling reasonably worthless, as in the absence of worth.  This is an endless rabbit trail of thought for me, considering what I bring to the world at large and what I have to offer, and in that respect, I come up with very little to soothe my restless mind and tired soul, and frankly, my annoyingly prevalent ego.  But a month ago, I came across this passage in a book on which I try ever so hard to base my life.   And it’s been in my mind ever since.
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
This is one of the more beautiful things to ever hear or read.  And I really wish I could wrap my mind fully around it.  But what I get from this is that the price that was paid for me (and you) is Jesus Christ.  The Son of God the Father.  Now, if the price that was paid for me is Jesus, then I am worth more than anything imaginable.  And so are you.  And so is every human, simply by being human.  We are intrinsically valuable in the eyes of the one true God.
This is changing the way I view myself, and the world, and everything.  I cannot possibly live my life the same way having understood this concept even a little bit.  And neither can you.
